Having decided to stop running the International in 1996, Mick Sletten turned his reserved ice time at Augsburg over to a newly formed organization led by Oregon native Mark Hunter. The United States Broomball Association became the first organization to offer an American National Championship. Hansen Sports defeated The Flames at Augsburg Arena to be crowned the first ever USBA National Champion.
The relationship between the USBA and a portion of the Minnesota broomball community became contentious to say the least. There were many disagreements over individual registration fees, insurance requirements, formats, scheduling, etc.
The conflict reached a peak in 1998 when a group of players, administrators, and game officials met to form a competing organization based in Minnesota. USA Broomball began play in 1999. Their first National championship was held at The Bloomington Ice Garden, with Hansen Sports of Richfield MN claiming the first Men’s A title over Benning Inc from Andover MN. The USA Broomball National Championship reached its peak of participation in 2010, with a world indoor record 69 teams competing at The Super Rink in Blaine MN. The incredible thing about that event was that it did not yet even include a Women’s division. That was 69 men’s and mixed teams!
The USA Broomball National Championship has travelled around the country, making stops in Omaha Nebraska, Fargo North Dakota (3x), Oxford Ohio, and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. It has visited legendary Minnesota broomball venues such as The Blaine Super Rink (5x), The Rosemount Horizon (5X), Spartan Stadium Richfield (2x) and the DECC/Amsoil Arena in Duluth MN. Current plans include a return visit to Richfield/Augsburg MN, as well as Syracuse NY, and Las Vegas NV
