I waited a while on this as I wanted to get it right.
As some of you may have heard, Fred Macalus Sr recently passed away. If you are unfamiliar with this broomball legend of the 60's, 70's and 80's, Fred was the driving force behind the legendary "Fred's Tires" teams of Minnesota fame.
He was also the father to two of my dear friends and teammates Tommy and Franko Macalus, as well as eldest son Fred Mac Jr. All three sons were absolute broomball icons, and all have joined their father in receiving America's highest broomball honor, induction into the American Broomball Alliance Hall of Fame.
Fred was a promotional genius when it came to showcasing the sport of broomball, and was the man responsible for the first ever World Broomball Championship (as featured in Sports Illustrated Magazine) held at the St. Paul Civic Center. I came up in the 80's watching his Fred's Tires teams dominate with skill, speed and toughness, while anarchy ruled both on and off the ice! I couldn't have respected their style anymore than I did, and patterned my Hansen Sports and USA Blue teams after those tough, tough teams from the early 80's. Fred once tore my ear partially off during a game when I was very young, and then came up and hugged me and told me my team was the future of the sport after the game. LOL, broomball in the 80's man, Fred was the face of it all!
It is with great pride, respect, and love for the Macalus family that I am announcing the commission of the "Fred Senior Cup". A trophy that will be engraved with his name, and presented annually to the winner of the Men A National Championship. All previous Men A National Champions will be engraved on the "Senior Cup" as well.
My tribute to one of the founding fathers of our great sport. Rest in peace Senior!
THANK YOU DAVEY,QUITE THE HONOR,!!! FIRST FN CLASS!!!
